Importing a Car to Spain: Complete Guide, Taxes & Checklist 2026

In Brief: Car Import to Spain

Bringing your own car to Spain is frequently much cheaper than buying a local second-hand car, as used vehicles in Spain carry elevated price tags. Furthermore, if you are relocating permanently, you can obtain a 100% exemption from the Spanish vehicle registration tax (IEDMT) when applying within 60 days of obtaining your residency or padrón.

Car Import Expat Checklist

2026 Checklist

Ensure all 4 steps are completed systematically:

1. Plan ITV Technical Inspection (Ficha Reducida or CoC)

Obtain a European Certificate of Conformity (CoC) or commission a certified Spanish engineer to draft a reduced technical sheet (Ficha Reducida) for €90–€150. Book an appointment at an ITV test station.

2. Check Registration Tax (Modelo 576 or Modelo 06 Exemption)

Verify your car's CO2 emissions. If relocating, claim 100% tax exemption via Modelo 06 within 60 days of getting your padrón or residency. Without exemption, tax rates range from 0% to 14.75%.

3. Arrange Spanish Vehicle Insurance (Cover on VIN)

Obtain provisional insurance cover from a Spanish broker (e.g. Liberty Seguros) using the vehicle identification number (VIN) to ensure immediate legal protection.

4. Finalise DGT Registration & Press Plates

Pay local road tax (IVTM) at your Town Hall or SUMA, pay the DGT government fee (€99.77), receive your Spanish registration card (Permiso de Circulación), and have physical number plates pressed (€30–€40).
