Understanding Spanish Vehicle Import Taxes
Importing your car to Spain is a popular option for homeowners and expats relocating to the Costa Blanca. Second-hand car prices in Spain tend to be higher than in the UK or Northern Europe. However, you must account for the Impuesto Especial sobre Determinados Medios de Transporte (IEDMT), commonly known as matriculation tax.
The 4 CO₂ Emissions Brackets (2026 Rates)
Unlike UK vehicle excise duties, Spanish registration tax is calculated as a direct percentage of the taxable residual value determined by the Tax Agency:
- 0% Tax: Emissions up to and including 120 g/km CO₂ (plus all 100% electric vehicles);
- 4.75% Tax: Emissions between 121 and 159 g/km CO₂;
- 9.75% Tax: Emissions between 160 and 199 g/km CO₂;
- 14.75% Tax: Emissions of 200 g/km CO₂ and above.
Official Depreciation Tables (Hacienda)
The Spanish Tax Agency publishes annual tables assigning an age depreciation factor to determine taxable residual value:
| Vehicle Age | Taxable Value Percentage | Vehicle Age | Taxable Value Percentage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 1 year | 100% | 6 to 7 years | 34% |
| 1 to 2 years | 84% | 7 to 8 years | 28% |
| 2 to 3 years | 67% | 8 to 9 years | 24% |
| 3 to 4 years | 56% | 9 to 10 years | 19% |
| 4 to 5 years | 47% | 10 to 11 years | 17% |
| 5 to 6 years | 39% | Over 12 years | 10% |
